DUCFS Wins National Award for 'Best Society Event'

You’ve seen the glorious robes of the Met Gala, the striking styles of Fashion For Relief, now picture Hannah Naomi Campbell Fisayo (Social Media Director & Resident Instagram Extraordinaire) fleeting up the stairs towards the National Societies Awards’ champagne reception, hosted by Cardiff Students Union.

Fashionably on time, we were ushered into the events space to meet our fellow Durham nominees. Bedecked in black tie and mood lighting setting the tone, we locked eyes with our rival Durham nominees for Best Society Event, who just so happened to have won the award the previous year. Our Welsh hosts put on quite a show and treated us to quite a feast at that, a 3-course-meal and entertainment!

Cue the nitty gritty: successive societies nominations were revealed, often to a hearty round of applause from their neighbouring students union; it was fantastic to hear of societies up and down the country being nominated and was testament to societies being core to the student experience.

Needless to say, we were all the more nervous-cum-enthusiastic by the time our own award was announced. The penultimate award ready to be announced, Hannah and I ready to applaud our fellow nominees, only to hear gasps and murmur upon the announcement of “£106,00 in aid of Mind”. Walking up to the stage was quite a blur as our table was right at the very back of the hall, thankful that our fellow students continued to applaud and avoiding a calamitous trip on the stairs, once safe behind the podium we were very thankful to accept the award on behalf of the DUCFS Executive Committee, our models and everyone who helped make DUCFS 2018 happen and that our total raised would go on to make a significant impact across the country.

Whisked from the stage and onto an interview, we continued to express our sincere thanks to all involved and that we are all very much looking forward to see what the coming years’ exec have in store.

Many fellow nominees came up to us at the afterparty (and even the next day in the city), in part to compliment our attire, but, perhaps more likely, keen hear more about DUCFS’ role as part of the Durham student experience: naturally we spoke all manner of things #fashun and exchanged a few ideas in regard to charitable ventures.

Keen to explore the delights of Cardiff the next day, we headed home for an early night…

Of all the questions we were asked, the one that came up again and again was simply ‘How did you do it?’, and to that we have so many people to attribute our success to. From the … brands, to our … sponsors, the models who made it a show worth seeing, the exec who worked tirelessly throughout the year and behind the scenes, but most of all to everyone who bought a ticket, liked a post, or came to an event. Without you guys there’s no way we would have been able to go from being the biggest event in Durham's social calendar to being recognised as the best social event in the Nation.
